Why Make Your Own Clay Hair Mask?

Making your own clay hair mask is so much more affordable than buying commercial hair masks. On average, we’ve seen clay hair masks being sold for anywhere between £20 and £50!

You don’t need to spend that much for a small tub of clay hair mask. All you need is some clay, natural oils and some hair nourishing ingredients!

Rhassoul Clay

What is Rhassoul Clay?

Rhassoul clay, also known as ghassoul clay, is a natural clay found in the Atlas mountains in Eastern Morocco.

Rhassoul clay can be used on all hair types from dry hair to oily scalps! It naturally absorbs excess oils and products build up on the scalp and hair leaving the hair looking refreshed.

It can also help improve hair texture, making hair more manageable and less prone to breakage.

Clay Hair Mask Recipe

This recipe uses natural ingredients, apart from cetyl alcohol. But don’t be alarmed, this isn’t the same thing as alcohols like isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol that is used to thicken mixtures, moisturise the hair and improve texture.

Method:

Hair Mask Ingredients

1. Combine the ingredients

  • Weigh out the shea butter, coconut oil, castor oil, argan oil and cetyl alcohol.
  • Heat the ingredients in a bowl over boiling water, or in a microwave in short bursts.
  • Make sure to continuously stir the ingredients so they are fully combined.
Whipped Mixture

2. Whip the mixture

  • Put the mixture in a fridge for about 1 hour to cool down.
  • Once the mixture is mostly set, take it out of the fridge.
  • Using an electric whisk or mixer, whip the mixture until it is a light and fluffy consistency.
Adding Clay

3. Add the clay

  • In a separate bowl, weigh out the rhassoul clay.
  • Add the clay to the whipped mixture a little bit at a time. If you add it all in one go, you may struggle to get the lumps out.
  • Once you’ve mixed in all of the clay, add the mixture to a container and now it is ready to use!

How To Use a Clay Hair Mask

Apply a small amount of the rhassoul clay hair mask to the ends of damp hair. Make sure to use a small amount at a time, a little goes a very long way! Let the mask sit on the hair for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse the mask off with a gentle shampoo until it is fully rinsed out of the hair.
